5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin   May 25, 2010
Eliot Cole (NYC)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Hi
I'll be quick.
I've never had a cell/mobile phone up until now, and won't in the future.

I don't carry this everywhere all the time, either.

But when I do, this is a very nice tool. The email functionality is perfect and works brilliantly. The email-SMS gateway is awesome too, and sates those friends who keep telling me to get a cell/mobile, kinda.

This would be a perfect catchall device to give your kids, to save on text & phone charges. Since I haven't ever had one (child or cell/mobile!), though, that's a moot point for me.

Thanks, Peek!

5 out of 5 stars An Inexpensive Alternative To A SmartPhone When You Just Need Wireless Text Email   May 8, 2010
Kenneth Isenberg (NORTH GRANBY, CT, US)
Bought the Peek to easily and inexpensively get text email on the go from my Yahoo and Gmail personal accounts. Works over the T-Mobile cellular network and the Peek servers are believed to be running on Amazon servers(probably one reason Amazon is selling it). Got it with the lifetime subscription option which should pay itself back in 1 to 2 years depending on the recurring Peek billing plan you compare it to (they have run anywhere from $10 to $20/month depending on promotions). Lifetime of course is the lifetime of the device (I bought a couple of cases so I don't trash it) and the Peek company (been around for 18+ months and have recently expanded to India so I think they should last).
Pros:
Fantastic price when you consider there's no monthly cellphone bill with the lifetime option. This really is a one-shot purchase. No need to give Peek a credit card number when you set up your Peek account because your service is already paid for...forever.
Easy to set-up an account on the device and on the Peek website, and add in your email addresses (one primary and up to 4 secondaries).
Thin and light. This is replacing a heavy, costly and terribly complicated 3G AT&T Tilt prepaid phone that served it's purpose, but wasn't what I needed (I traded that in for a store gift card on a different website). Instead I now use a Peek for portable wireless text email, a USB data key or wifi for serious wireless data on a laptop (in my case a MacBook Pro) and an unlocked GSM prepaid cellphone for phone calls.
By having a cellphone separate from your Peek device that means you can read or send an email on your Peek device while talking on the phone.
Fast learning curve. Menus are simple and easy to understand. Scroll wheel and shortcut keys rather than a touch screen but that keeps the cost low and keeps it very reliable.
Good customer service when my GMail account stopped working one day. They put in a trouble ticket and it was back up when they promised it would be.
Possible to handle limited attachments like weather forecast maps on demand, small photos and small word or pdf documents.
Includes accessories like a small case and AC charger. Also recommend an auto charger, a better quality case (Amazon, Ebay or other source) and an upgrade cable (think only through Peek store which is handled by CDW currently, haven't gotten it yet myself).
Can send and receive text messages from cellphones.
Can also do email back requests for weather, news, directions, etc. similar to old fax-back systems. Since has no web browser, this adds a little functionality.
This is a GPRS data device with a modest CPU running it, not EDGE, 3G or 4G LTE. Be patient. But since it's sending small text emails and text messages, speeds are reasonable for what it is.
Definitely works domestically on T-Mobile and several people have noted it can roam unofficially in some other countries at no charge (but no guarantees that it will).
It has an airplane mode so when the flight attendant says you can use electronic devices you can look over your received emails and write responses to emails that will be sent once you land and turn airplane mode off(which turns the 2 way data radio back on).
They do allow MS-Exchange email accounts although I've heard it works in some instances but not in others (I'm using my Peek strictly for personal purposes right now so I haven't tried that).
The have a comprehensive user blog on the Peek website. Recommend signing up to get advice and news on new Peek features or upgrades.
Cons:
Not 100% reliable but no wireless data device that currently exists is. If emails don't seem to be going through for some reason(happens on rare occasion), restarting the Peek device usually solves the problem (more drastic steps would be a system reset or pulling the battery out and reinstalling it). It's rare I have to do a restart, but it's good to know this is an easy solution if you experience a problem.
Peek works on T-Mobile that has good coverage...but not everywhere. Check on the T-Mobile website or with friends or family on T-Mo coverage where you need it before you buy the Peek device.
This is a really basic text email device. What graphics it can't include as attachments, it converts to basic crude text email. Like the name, it give you a Peek at your email, if you want to see the full email in full HTML with all the graphics and attachments, you'll need to go to a computer. But a computer weighs a lot more, so this gives you quick lightweight access to your emails and at a bargain price.
Upgrades are accomplished with a special serial converter USB cable and a Windows computer. Planning on getting the special cable but in no rush.

5 out of 5 stars Works great with Gvoice   May 6, 2010
T. Maas (Midwest, U.S.)
An unstoppable deal if you're a Google voice user AND are within Tmobile service area. Outside Tmobile coverage, the peek is a paperweight; without Gvoice, Peek is a great email device, txting is just a bit less convenient. Protect the peek! I am hoping my pronto will last minimum 3 years, bringing the monthly cost <= $9

Oh yeah and if you're wondering about the device itself, fit and finish are top-notch. Battery life is at least 2-3 days for me, depending on how much mail I'm sending. It just takes a little time to get used to the clickwheel. (think back to the scroll wheel blackberry devices)

The only thing I could ask for on the peek is to include alarm clock functionality, just for those times when you can't afford your other device alarm not to wake you up!

Cheers to the Peek Team for a unique idea in an ocean of wireless providers who don't seem too concerned about their customers.

4 out of 5 stars Great simple device!!!   April 30, 2010

This is a very great device. Once you know what you are getting you realize how nice of a device this is. Support is great. The owners are active in the forums and always around to help. Get one, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Peek Pronto Saves Thousands of $   March 25, 2010
Arrdvarks (Ohio)
Who would want a peek pronto? Me a businessman. I do not want workers surfing the web or generating huge fees. The pronto is PERFECT. I will own 5 before the summer is over. What ways is the peek better than my blackberry? The keyboard is huge. For door to door sales, keying is much easier do to the larger keyboard. The use of a qwerty keyboard makes finding the keys easier while talking to clients. The fee for the peek is 300$ once for the lifetime use of the device. (My 3 phone and 2 pack blackberry plan is 285$ a month thru verizon.) When I sell door to door, the blackberry is never used. In what ways are we implementing these devices in my business? EVERYWHERE. Our contractors have one at each trailer (4 total). They submit times and sign off on subcontracts digitally with them. If they need materials, they send an email to our Materials person. If we measure a home for service, we key measurements into the peek pronto and email them to the office. As you can imagine I am a Devry IS graduate. My 160 page plus code module for Access database, grabs peek pronto template based emails and automatically loads estimates, times, and writes export scripts to our accounting package. The key missing ingredient was an economical email based system to submit data from the field. THE PEEK PRONTO IS PERFECT. My guys cant waste time surfing the web or talking on the phone on personal calls. Amazing. After my redesign of my business. No one keys contracts, times or subcontracts. All data is keyed through a peek pronto in the field. BEAUTIFUL. I now have free time during the day. More time for Jaguars and my family. Good luck. The key thing to remember the pronto is NOT a SMARTPHONE. This is the very reason the peek pronto is perfect.
