2 out of 5 stars Out of Date Out of the Box   January 6, 2009
I was excited to finally get a GPS system, not that I need directions all the time, but just in case. The Amazon price on the Magellan 4250 was the best anywhere, including the web, and Amazon being a company that I trust, I didn't hesitate to order.

Upon receipt, in ONE day, earlier than promised (props to Amazon!), I found the 4250 easy to understand and use...but I also found it lacking. As the title says, it's out of date when you open the box. This was the end of 2008, beginning of 2009. But it came with the 2007 maps. You can go online, or a retailer like Fry's, and purchase the update disk to the 2008/2009 maps...for an extra $79, and there is no deal on this disk anywhere. That's an extra 66% of the original price, just to make the unit current!

Does it make a difference if you have an updated map? YES! Imagine my disappointment when the first thing I test the unit on are routes to my own home...and it gave the WRONG directions, whether it was the shortest or fastest, or most use of freeways, or least freeways, not once did it get the route correct, not once did it give the best or shortest route. And I could never force it to go the correct way. Part of it could be that in the last couple years the turn into my street changed, from having an island you couldn't turn left on, to having the island remove and now have the ability to turn left. Result? The old map doesn't reflect this, so it always comes up with the incorrect route. Actually, I have found that maybe half of the routes I have planned have ignored the best, fastest and shortest routes. It gets you where you're going, but if YOU already know, you'll find it frustrating that it got it wrong. Correction? This unit should only be sold with the current map, AND ALL map updates must be free. Without that, I can't recommend this unit to anyone. It also needs a firmware update, but that is free from Magellan, and it's a good improvement (larger route arrows for one improvement.)

Another problem is the advertised Blue-Tooth capabilites. I found that it did not work well with my phone, and is in fact totally unusable if the car is being driven (speaker volumne is barely audible, even with both the phone and the unit volume controls at max.) I would have found this to be the case if I had first gone on the Magellan site and looked. There is a link there that gives you a list of the cell phones that do or don't work with the 4250. Mine, a Motorola V195, was one of the ones listed as not working properly. If I had read this first, I probably would not have ordered the unit. Lesson learned? On any Blue-toothed capable GPS, be sure to go to the manufacture's website and confirm whether your cell phone is compatible.

Lastly, and this is a problem for nearly all GPS units, they need to include other attachment options, especially here in California, where attaching a GPS to the center of your windshield, under the rearview mirrow, is as of last week, now illegal. And the window mount doesn't attach to the dash, unless you permanently glue on a disk, which is supplied. Supplying an air-vent mount would solve these problems.

Maybe the newer Magellans have corrected these problems, but I'd but hestitant to try another.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Magellan Customer Service   January 3, 2009
Purchased this product new but it had outdated maps. Ordered the map updates but after many hours of tech support it turns out that the 08/09 map update is not compatible with Windows XP SP3. SP3 has been out since May -- prior to the release of the updates. Magellan has no solution, but the fact remains that they are way behind the technology curve.

1 out of 5 stars Magellan GPS - Review   December 31, 2008

The unit is good and works great however the worst part is Magellan support when one wants to update the mapping software. After purchasing several units for family members have come to discover that Magellan wants "full' price for each unit to update and offers no family plan so this will add several hundred dollars to the cost of the unit with each update made. This makes it a really hard choice to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased   December 31, 2008
I am very happy with the Magellan Maestro 4250 Refurbished 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator. It looks and works like brand new. I updated the firmware to the latest version with the included USB cable and have had no problems at all. For me this is a huge improvement from my older cd-rom based GPS unit (year 2000). The Magellan Maestro 4250 is small, portable and easy to use and the battery lets you take it anywhere, I sometimes bring mine inside to plan trips for the following day. There may be better gps units out there but for the price this one works great for me.
