1 out of 5 stars A Printer That Actually Prevents You From Working!   July 29, 2010
D. Denton (Berkeley, CA)
I set this printer up to run on my network, and initially it worked well. The software has some unusual features, but I was able to make it work. Then after about a week, it simply stopped responding and gave me some wacky message about port configuration. I called Canon and wasted some hours with their techs who are simply reading out of the manuals.

I gave up and plugged it into the USB port, because I have work to do. Then the print cartridges ran out. I had only printed about 75 pages and few in color. I bought the 4 pack of ink which includes a small black cartridge. However, it won't print without the second larger black cartridge. I ordered the CI-220 from Amazon. It takes two weeks for Amazon for delivery. This thing needs to be fed like a voracious animal, excreting massive amounts of non-recyclable plastic.

However, this is not all. Canon has a chip in the cartridges that is very unreliable. Sometimes it won't print because the chip must be reset. So open it up and take out the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. But this is not all. It prints wavy horizontal lines on PDF files and spreadsheets. Text is OK. The Canon techs just kept reading from their manual. There is no adjustment for this issue.

I paid $99 for this printer and it has absorbed $800 in my time. It's a VAMPIRE!

2 out of 5 stars GUZZLES INK...Stay Away   July 21, 2010
Erik Sun (Laguna Hills, CA)
The quality of the printing is good. Best printer I've had in terms of print quality - I work from home and I print pretty much everything you can think of.

HOWEVER, this thing guzzles ink like you wouldn't believe. The wireless was a nightmare to set up (still didn't set it up).

I would look elsewhere. I've had the printer for 2 months and I've gone through 2 color replacement cartridges (I barely print color...it somehow sucks all the ink)

AND FOUR yes FOUR black cartridges printing fewer than 500 pages...

INK costs more than the damn printer!

5 out of 5 stars Very good for this "light" user   July 21, 2010

I guess I am a "light" user. We use this printer in our home, but don't print too frequently. It has performed well overall. Scanning & the scanning software is particularly excellent. Overall, it's got a great feature set in a nice looking compact form.

As with all printers, I always seem to need to change ink cartridges too frequently. However, that has been the case with all of my ink jet printers, so I can't really knock points off of this printer for that gripe.

I recommend the MX860.

4 out of 5 stars Love the features, works on PC and Mac   July 20, 2010
Groo8 (San Jose, CA United States)
It was time for a new printer/scanner. I picked the Canon MX860 based on the features that I wanted the most: Wireless connectivity, photo printing, scanning and faxing. The setup for PC was relatively straight-forward and painless. The setup for the Mac needs to be updated. The installation CD was more than a year old and didn't work. I had to download the latest installation image from the Canon web site.

Pros:
- Decent print quality for photos
- Acceptable print quality for color documents
- Relatively easy-to-use software to make printing, scanning and faxing easier
- Lots of scanning options
- Got it on sale from Amazon for $99 shipped.

Cons:
- Color cartridges are too small and run out quite easily
- Took a while to figure out how to connect wirelessly due to old documentation & setup files

Overall, I'm very happy with this printer. I've not done much heavy printing, but I hope this printer will last me a long time.

2 out of 5 stars SHRINKING INK TANKS!!   July 10, 2010

I got this printer to replace my old Canon MP810. I LOVED the MP810 as finally, here was a printer that had separate color ink tanks (unlike my HPs) and had great features. Along with my PrintFab printer drives which forces the printer to use only black ink for black and white printing (what a novel idea right!), I had NO complaints.

So along comes the MX860. I'm brimming with excitement as I open the box and am SHOCKED to see that the ink tanks are barely HALF the size of the ink tanks used in the MP810. For anyone replacing an older Canon printer, do yourself a favor and compare side-by-side your current ink tank with the CLI-221 ink tanks that are now used in ALL of Canon's new consumer inkjets, not just this one. So many people have complained about the way this printer drinks ink, but its likely due to the fact that your only getting half of what you used to get (FOR THE SAME PRICE NO LESS!!).

I'm also NOT a fan of the lack of rear loading paper trays. I can't begin to tell how annoying it is to have to lift this 30 lb printer every time I want to add more paper. Not to mention the fact that printing envelopes and heavy stock has now been made substantially more difficult, if not impossible.

WIth Canon's newest inkjets, we see Canon aligning themselves with Epson and HP to rip off consumers with overpriced, tiny ink tanks. As to why they ruined what were once really good printers, I wish I knew. Needless to say, the MX860 is a step back for Canon. Anyone looking for a Canon would be advised to try and get a hold of a MP850 or earlier. They're great printers with larger ink tanks and rear loading capability.
